Welcome!

We are Glenlea Mennonite Church, located 10 minutes south of Winnipeg on HWY 75.  Our Sunday School begins at 10:00 am  and our worship service starts at 11:00.  We are a relaxed & informal bunch who love Jesus, and do our best to be warm & hospitable. We are a small congregation - though we have come together from across the country and around  the world - who loves to sing, study, pray, and worship together. We also love to laugh and feast together, and earnestly seek to be Christ’s hands, feet, and light in this world. Being the hands & feet means we get involved in missions across the globe - like in Madagascar - and also at home - with Living Bible Explorers. We are also involved in Refugee Settlement with MCC and seek to live out our faith at school, work, home, and with our families, friends, and neighbours.

All are welcome to attend!

"Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it" Luke 11:28

our mission:

To Experience and celebrate God’s love through Jesus Christ & share it within and beyond the congregation.

our history

The flood of '97 had a major impact on the history of our church...

1925-1932:
The Beginning...

In 1925, Frank F. Wiens came to Glenlea as a child along with his siblings and parents Franz and Aganetha Wiens. In 1953 he was one of two candidates chosen by the Glenlea membership to help with the ministry, and he continued this service until 1976. From this perspective, he shared these insightful comments on the role of worship in the Glenlea Mennonite Church during the early days.

There are still a few among us who can remember the humble beginnings of the original two groups of Mennonites that came to Glenlea in February 1925. These groups came to Glenlea from South Russia, one group from Schoenfeld and the other from the Steinbach area. Our parents, relatives and friends who gathered in Glenlea all had one thing in common: uprooted, homeless and destitute, many having lost members of their families through starvation, murder and disease; they came empty-handed with few earthly possessions to their new home in Canada.

1937 - 2020:
Church Leadership & Changes

In 1937,Rev. Pankratz began to serve the congregation, followed by Rev. Jacob Toews in 1938 who also became the leader of the young people. Jacob’s enthusiasm, knowledge of God’s word, and his memory of countless songs and poems were greatly appreciated.

In 1950,we were able to dedicate our own church building to His service. Although the building was not new, it served us well for twenty-five years.  In 1954,our leading minister, Rev. Johann C. Friesen, who had served the congregation through the pioneer years, was called home. Rev. Johann Rogalsky was now the only ordained minister left to serve us until 1971.At that time the congregation had three ordained ministers, with the addition of Rev. John Friesen in 1964, Rev. Jakob Friesen in 1965 and Rev. Frank Enns in 1971, so Frank Wiens asked to be relieved of his duties.

We decided to build a new sanctuary in 1975 for our growing congregation. Rev. Ernie Wiens began to work with the ministerial by 1982, and Rev. Del Epp joined him in 1990. Anita Neufeld was also installed as our youth pastor in 2000. The Lord richly blessed us with three long serving pastors through 2008. Dale Friesen led us with wisdom, humour, and passion for discipleship for seven years. Now Cheryl Braun has stepped into the role and carries on the pastoral tradition of leading the congregation in worship every Sunday, and also serving the small groups meeting in our homes throughout the week.
